Use ChatGPT as a fast all-rounder, Claude for long, careful work and for Claude Code, and Gemini if your day runs on Gmail, Docs and Sheets.
What's the difference between ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?
They're the three big AI assistants, made by OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude) and Google (Gemini). For everyday tasks — drafting an email, summarizing a PDF, brainstorming — any of them will do a good job. The differences show up at the edges: which one can make images, which one handles very long documents, which one lives inside the tools you already use, and how much the paid plan costs.

When should you use ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is the generalist. It's strong at quick drafts, brainstorming and image creation, and its custom GPTs are an easy way to save a repeatable task as your own little assistant. If you want one tool that does a bit of everything — writing, research, images, voice — it's usually the default, and the free plan is generous for everyday chat.
When should you use Claude?
Claude tends to be more careful and thorough, which shows most on long or nuanced work: reviewing a lengthy document, thinking through a decision with real tradeoffs, or holding context across a project. It's also home to Claude Code, which can build websites, automations and tools on your computer from plain-English requests — no coding background needed. The one thing it doesn't do is make images.
When should you use Gemini?
Gemini's biggest advantage is location: on paid plans it's built into Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Slides, so you get AI help without leaving the tab. It also makes images on the free plan, makes video on paid plans, and its paid plans include a lot of Google storage — which can make it the best value if you were paying for storage anyway.
Do you need to pay for more than one?
No. Most people who use AI every day end up with one paid plan and one free one. Pick the paid plan that matches your main job from the table above, and keep a second assistant on its free plan for the occasional task it does better — images, a very long document, or something inside Google's apps.

- Long, careful work, or building things with Claude Code → Claude.
- Your work already lives in Gmail, Docs and Sheets → Gemini.
